Welcome to The Fix

There’s a lighthouse at the mouth of Narragansett Bay in Newport, Rhode Island. It’s called Castle Hill, and it has been a fixed point for navigators for generations. My family has been part of Newport since 1796 — and growing up there, the water taught me everything I needed to know about what it means to navigate a life.

The tides come in whether you’re ready or not. The wind shifts without warning. And when conditions get rough, what you need isn’t a longer to-do list. You need a fixed point. Something solid to orient toward.

That’s what The Fix is.

I’m Susan Leys — author, clinician, coach, and consultant with thirty years of experience on the front lines of healthcare. Emergency psych. Crisis intervention. The 3am kind of work where you learn very quickly what people actually struggle with when everything falls apart.

What I found, over and over, was that the people who came through hardest weren’t the ones with the best plan. They were the ones who knew how to read the conditions, make a course correction, and keep moving. They’d learned — sometimes the hard way — that the ebb isn’t a failure. It’s just part of the flow.

Here’s what you’ll find at The Fix:

Every week I write about what actually works — no fluff, no filler, no advice that sounds good in a conference room and falls apart in real life. The Fix covers four areas where people struggle most:

  • Burnout & Resilience — for healthcare professionals and anyone running on empty, real strategies for recovery and finding your footing again.

  • Communication & Influence — body language, tact, active listening, strategic conversation — how the words you choose shape everything around you.

  • Mind & Mental Health — the inner work that makes the outer work possible. Honest, practical writing about emotional intelligence, stress, and psychological wellbeing.

  • Career & Leadership — workplace culture, goal setting, personal branding, and navigating the professional moments that define who you become.

Why subscribe?

Because you deserve more than advice that doesn’t work. Because you’re done just getting through the day. And because somewhere between the ebb and the flow, there’s a version of your life and career that’s clearer, stronger, and more purposeful than what you’re living right now.

Every new issue lands directly in your inbox. Free to start. Written by a real person with thirty years of hard-won perspective and a lighthouse in her banner.

Pull up a chair. The tide’s coming in and we’ve got things to talk about.

Thirty years in healthcare taught me what people struggle with most when everything falls apart. I don't write about problems. I write about what actually fixes them. Pull up a chair.
